For years I’ve written melodies first, and lyrics later. Some songs I considered incomplete because of lack of words, until I realized they worked fine as instrumental pieces. In fact, I came to believe that lyrics can actually limit the “meaning” of songs, instead of allowing the music to simply make you feel something beyond thoughts and concepts.
With “Reach,” I feel something aspirational, with the movement of the music “reaching” for a higher place and thus building and then coming to rest on a new plane. The addition of violin, for me, intensified that effect. Simply feel the music as you hear it, and go wherever it takes you.
